The Homeostasis Journal · Last updated October 20, 2026
The Homeostasis Journal is designed for many ways of learning and working. It follows the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), from CAST, and aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What the journal offers
- Every button, checklist, rating, and drag-and-drop item works by keyboard, with a visible focus ring. Items that can be dragged can also be picked up and placed with Enter.
- Screen readers hear a name for every writing line and control, and a description in words for each diagram.
- Narrated lessons and walkthroughs have captions, which are on by default, and a choice of narration speeds.
- Text and colors meet WCAG 2.2 AA contrast, checked page by page across all 22 kinds of journal page.
- When your device asks for reduced motion, page turns and animations are turned off.
- Your progress is shown in words and gentle visuals, with no scores to calculate.
Known limits
Journal pages keep the fixed shape of a letter-size sheet (11 by 8.5 inches) and scale to fit the window. On a phone, or when the browser is zoomed to 200 percent, a page is shown smaller rather than rearranged (WCAG 1.4.10, Reflow). A computer or tablet gives the most comfortable view. We are working on this for a future edition.
