The Homeostasis Journal. Process, Balance, Flow.
"Balance is not achieved through willpower; it is achieved through creating the conditions for equilibrium to emerge."
I built the journal modeling homeostasis as the interaction between our daily Process and Flow, our have-to-dos and our want-to-dos.
Because of the way it's designed, the journal takes only about ten minutes a day.

The Idea
In biology, homeostasis is the way a living thing keeps its inner balance as conditions change around it. A cell reaches equilibrium through the conditions it lives in, with no effort of will.
The journal brings that idea to daily life. Your days hold two kinds of activity, and the place where they meet is where balance grows.
- Process
Your have-to-dos, from work to the daily routines that keep life running. - Flow
Your want-to-dos, the passions and movement that bring you joy. - Balance
The overlap, which widens as you learn the conditions that bring you back to center.
How It Works
Each day, about ten minutes
The Daily Page
Plan your hours beside your appointments, then check in on seven areas of self-regulation and write a reflection. Your day appears as its own Process, Balance, Flow diagram.
Each Sunday
The Weekly GNP
Close the week with the Good, the Negativisms, and the Positives. The positives you choose carry forward onto next week's planner.
Each month
Patterns and Progress
The journal connects the dots for you, revealing the patterns that shape your balance and offering ways back to center when a month asks a lot of you.
If you use it
Google Calendar
Your appointments appear on your daily and weekly pages. When you plan something in the journal, it offers to add it to your calendar, and adds it only with your yes.
Your Way
Watch, Listen, or Read
Brenny narrates the lessons and walkthroughs, with captions. The journal follows the principles of Universal Design for Learning and meets the WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standard.
Computer or Tablet
Turn the pages like a book. On a tablet, you can write with a digital pencil. Any page prints at full size (11 by 8.5 inches), in color.
The Maker
The Homeostasis Journal was created by Brenda Colleen Ficoturo, known as Brenny, a life science teacher and instructional designer. She built it for her own days first, bringing together the careful observation of a scientist and the structure of a day planner.
